If you have oily skin and are wondering which foundation application techniques are best, the answer depends on your skin type, the coverage you want, and the features you’re looking for. Here are five foundation tips that dermatologists recommend. These options will help you get beautiful, blemish-free skin without clogging your pores or making your face appear shiny or greasy after application.

Foundation Primer

Primer is a great option for those with oily skin. It’s designed to create a barrier between your skin and the makeup you’re about to apply. Priming also helps stop oil from coming through the foundation. If you don’t want to use primer, try using an oil-free moisturiser instead. You can find these in any drugstore, but some people say that they make their skin more prone to breakouts. They do have less of a chance of becoming too shiny during the day than regular moisturisers, though.

Liquid vs. Cream vs. Powder

Liquid foundation is typically the best choice for oily skin because it is more likely to cover pores and allow your skin to breathe. Cream or powder foundations can be good options too, but you should make sure they have a matte finish. Another option would be to mix cream or powder with liquid foundation; this way you can get some of the benefits of both formulas without their drawbacks. If you’re using powder, try using oil-free powders that are finely milled as these are easier to apply and less likely to show up on acne bumps. Keep in mind that regardless of what type of foundation you use, the best thing you can do for oily skin is wear an SPF (at least 30) every day.

Sun Protection

You may think that SPF is only for people with dry skin. That’s not the case! Sun protection is key to reducing the risk of wrinkles and ageing spots–and it’s especially important if you have oily skin. Oil production increases when your skin is exposed to the sun. Wearing sunscreen will help minimise this.

  1. Make sure your sunscreen has an SPF of at least 30.
  2.  Apply your makeup after you put on sunscreen so it doesn’t get wiped off.
  3. Wear hats and sunglasses to protect your face from sunlight.
  4. Try to stay out of direct sunlight between 10am-2pm.

Application Tools

One of the best ways to reduce oily skin is to use a serum or lotion with anti-acne ingredients. Try a purifying spot treatment for an oil-free complexion and youthful radiant skin. Use gentle facial scrubs that contain active charcoal that gently exfoliate dead skin cells without stripping essential oils from the surface of your skin. Experiment with new textures like mousses and liquids, which feel lighter on the face and can help control excess oil production.

Midday Oil Control Tools

Dermatologists recommend oil sheets to stop shine during the day. One way to do this is by dabbing the oil sheet onto your skin with a dry sponge or brush and then giving yourself a light pat with your fingers to make sure it’s applied evenly.  The product should feel dry and powdery when you’re done, not oily. Oil Sheets can be used on any area of your face that feels oily throughout the day.
